I’ve never really done any embroidery, but it’s a craft I’ve always wanted to try. So when I saw this post on Sew Mama Sew about Little Dorrit & Co’s Summer Nights Stitch-Along, I decided to stitch-along!
I had to go shopping for a small embroidery hoop, and while I was in my sewing shop, I spied a fat quarter of starry fabric for sale that I thought would suit the project. To mark the template, I used a Prym Aqua Trickmarker which I already had in my sewing box. So these bright blue lines will all disappear once I’ve finished!
This week, I practised running stitches, back stitches and long straight stitches. I’m familiar with all those stitches already so it’s a nice way to ease myself into embroidery!
Are any of you taking part in this stitch-along?
Can’t wait to see the finished project! Looks like it’s going to be really sweet.
Thank you! 🙂
I’m looking forward to the next installment!
When I’ve attempted embroidery, I don’t use a hoop, I hold the fabric in my hand. My Mum taught me , she is a qualified embroydress , on some thing so small it is easier with no frame. I remember her embroidery frames ( used only for large commissions) they were between 4 to 6 ft. She made church altar cloths & banners etc, they were beautiful. I sat as a child underneath when she worked in the middle to push the needle back through!
Good luck, she always said it was the end result that mattered.
Thank you!
My mother did a lot of embroidery when she was younger and she never used a frame or hoop either.
Personally, I prefer sewing with the hoop!
I absolutely love creating artwork in embroidery hoops – it’s so effective, particularly if you choose a beautiful fabric as your base. Then quite often I use the hoop as a frame and simply hang my work up on the wall! Great post x
Yes I have seen hoops use as decorative features!
I’m going to make mine into a mini quilted block, I think.
This is going to look great when you’re done – I love the fabric too!
Thank you! I’m dying to see how it turns out too! 🙂
My sister used to embroider and she found it very relaxing. I thought about doing it after she passed, but couldn’t bring myself to do it. Happy Holiday!
Any handcraft can be relaxing, if you don’t feel able to embroider, you could try crochet or sewing maybe? And make some nice accessories for your lovely wardrobe!
Yes, in the fall I will pull out the sewing machine again.
It seems to me that embroidery is making a comeback right now-you’ll be at the cutting edge of the trend! The fabric you chose is charming and your stitches look great so far. Keep us posted!
Thanks, I will!
I’m not taking part, but that is a sweet little project. I loved embroidery when I was in high school and college. It’s relaxing. Enjoy. Your stitches are perfection.
Thank you!
I’m certainly enjoying it so far.
